What is PIPAC?

PIPAC is Pressurized Intraperitoneal Aerosol Chemotherapy is an innovative treatment for peritoneal carcinomatosis, a condition where cancer spreads within the peritoneal cavity (the lining of the abdominal organs). It is mainly used for cancers such as ovarian, gastric, colorectal, and peritoneal mesothelioma.

How PIPAC Works:

  • Minimally Invasive: The procedure is performed laparoscopically, reducing the risks associated with open surgery.
  • Pressurized Aerosol Delivery: Chemotherapy drugs are transformed into a fine aerosol and sprayed under pressure inside the abdomen. This increases drug penetration into cancerous tissues while using lower doses compared to traditional chemotherapy.
  • Repeated Cycles: PIPAC is often repeated every 4-6 weeks to maximize its effectiveness while minimizing systemic toxicity.
